THE SANFORD INSTITUTE, CENTER FOR MINDFULNESS, AND COMPASSION INSTITUTE PARTNER TO PROVIDE FREE ONLINE SUPPORT FOR THE COMMUNITY

As we confront the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us are experiencing a great deal of distress about how to carry out professional duties while also attending to the needs of family members and friends. We understand the toll on the community. Increased anxiety and stress can compromise wellbeing. In this time of need, through a shared vision, the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness, Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion, and the Compassion Institute are teaming up to provide free, daily online streams and recordings of mindfulness and compassion sessions. We encourage your participation.

T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion

Enabled by a generous gift from South Dakota businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, the Institute for Empathy and Compassion at UC San Diego will explore the neurobiology of compassion, inform medical education and address the epidemic of physician burnout.

Events offered to the Community

Dedicated to leading a new era of health care based upon empathy validated by science, the T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion opens its events to the campus, local and global community.

Events Calendar

Neurobiology of Compassion

Using state-of-the-art imaging technologies, combined with multidisciplinary expertise, institute researchers will map empathy in the brain and its neurological underpinnings to design new ways to translate biology to behavior.

Research

Medical Education

Through empirical research into mechanisms that enhance compassion and empathy, institute scientists will provide evidence that informs educators about curricular design and aids them in piloting interventions and assessing results.

Education

Physician Burnout

Burnout and mental health issues impact roughly half of all practicing physicians. New programs and approaches, based upon institute data and discoveries, will promote wellness programs to prevent, intercept and reverse the health epidemic afflicting current clinicians.
