Empathy and Compassion Interventions to Enhance Student Wellbeing and Success in STEM and Healthcare Education

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion (TDSIEC) at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. In a cross departmental joint initiative with the School of Biological Sciences, the TDSIEC’s Center for Empathy and Social Justice in Human Health (CESJHH) seeks to recruit candidates for a postdoctoral position. This position will be co-advised by Professors Gentry Patrick and Stanley Lo in the School of Biological Sciences. Dr. Patrick also serves as Center Director of the CESJHH. We are using design-based research to iteratively develop, implement, self-study, evaluate, and disseminate student support models to advance the wellbeing and success of students from minoritized communities in STEM and healthcare education via empathy- and compassion-based interventions and programming. This position will collaborate with researchers, practitioners, administrators, staff, and faculty to examine science- and practice-based elements for new models to enhance and advance student success, mental health and wellbeing.

WHAT WE OFFER:
This position will hold an appointment in the School of Biological Sciences, will regularly participate in Sanford Institute activities, and will make significant contributions to innovative models for student success in STEM, among a growing community of scholars and researchers whose focus is basic, applied, and collaborative research in empathy and compassion. Candidates are expected to actively participate in collaborative efforts between Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion and School of Biological Sciences. Salary plus benefits and appointment level are commensurate on experience and qualifications based on University of California pay scales. The position is expected to have a start date of March 1st, 2023, or after.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should have a deep understanding of the current literature on equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice, especially in postsecondary education; experience with relevant mixed-method, qualitative, or quantitative methodological backgrounds; and documented experience and skills in communication and project management. We particularly value collaborative individuals with the ability to also work independently, mentor students, and coordinate multiple parallel projects. Candidates must have a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in a STEM discipline, science or STEM education, or a related social science discipline prior to start of employment at UC San Diego.
