About our Awards

ELIGIBILITY

The primary applicant and award recipient must be an employee of UC San Diego. Funds will be awarded to the department of the primary applicant. It is the responsibility of the primary applicant and their department to manage award funds. If program guidelines allow for outside collaborators, it is the responsibility of the  primary applicant and their department to facilitate sub-awards.

AWARD PERIOD

All Center funds are issued for a period of one year. If program guidelines allow for additional years of funding, investigators may apply for a second year of funding at the conclusion of their award period.

AMOUNT

Award amounts vary by program and cycle. Please refer to individual funding announcements for maximum award amounts.

ALLOWABLE COSTS

Proposal submissions must include a detailed budget with justification. Allowable expenses will include those normally permissible under NIH funding, including personnel, research reagents, and resources and small pieces of equipment. No renovations will be supported. In accordance with our donor agreement, Center awards do not allow indirect costs.

Please refer to individual funding announcements for additional information on allowable costs.

BUDGET CHANGES AND REALLOCATION

Investigators are expected to follow the planned use of funds as outlined in their submitted proposal. Changes in fund allocation greater than 25% of the total award require advance Institute approval.

ADDITIONAL TERMS

By accepting the award, the award recipient commits to providing regular reviews of progress and a final financial report. They are responsible for reporting significant deviations from the research program supported under the application. The award recipient agrees to acknowledge Sanford Institute funding in manuscripts and other products that arise from work funded by the award.  Research products developed under the project must be shared widely with the research community and made available under an open-source license. At the conclusion of each award period, the award recipient will be expected to present their findings to the Institute.

The above is general information about our awards. Complete terms of award are provided within formal award notice.
